United States Visa Updates for Nigerian Applicants: Important Changes Effective April 22, 2025
Jennifer

Are you planning to attend a United States visa interview in Lagos or Abuja? Then take note of important updates issued by the United States Embassy in Nigeria. Starting Tuesday, April 22, 2025, new requirements will be strictly enforced for all visa applicants at both consular locations.

These changes are designed to enhance the efficiency of the visa process and ensure that all applicants provide accurate and consistent information. Here's a breakdown of what you need to know and how to prepare.

New Requirements for Visa Interviews in Nigeria

1. Bring the Correct DS-160 Confirmation Page

Every applicant is now required to bring the DS-160 confirmation page that includes a barcode starting with “AA00…”. This barcode must match exactly with the one used to schedule your visa appointment.

Why is this important?

The DS-160 form is the official online application for a United States nonimmigrant visa. The unique barcode generated when you complete the form is used to track your application. If the barcode on the DS-160 you bring to your interview does not match the one used to schedule your appointment, you may be turned away at the gate or result in the need to reschedule your appointment and repay the previously paid fee.

2. Your Appointment Must Match the DS-160 Location

When filling out your DS-160, you are asked to select a location (either Lagos or Abuja) where you intend to apply. From now on, applicants must attend their interview at the same location selected in their DS-160.

What happens if there's a mismatch?

If you filled out your DS-160 selecting Lagos, but booked your appointment in Abuja, your appointment may be cancelled, and you will need to start over.

3. No Reusing Old DS-160 Forms

Each new appointment requires a newly completed DS-160 form. Reusing a DS-160 form that was submitted for a previous application is no longer permitted.

What You Should Do Now

To ensure a smooth visa interview process, follow these steps:

  • Double-check your DS-160 form: Make sure the confirmation page has the correct barcode (starts with AA00…) and that it matches the one you used when booking your appointment.

  • Confirm your interview location: Your appointment location must match the location selected in your DS-160. If there’s a mismatch, update it immediately.

  • Use a new DS-160 form for each application: Do not recycle an old form from a previous application, even if you’re applying for the same visa type.

  • Ask for help early: If you notice any issues, you can submit a support ticket through your United States Visa Info account at least 10 business days before your appointment.

Final Thoughts

While these updates may seem like small adjustments, overlooking them can lead to delays or even cancellation of your visa appointment. It’s essential to prepare thoroughly, double-check your documents, and make sure everything aligns before the day of your interview.

If you’re unsure about any step in the process, it’s best to seek help from a reliable visa consultant or reach out directly to the United States' Embassy through official channels.

Stay informed, stay prepared and good luck with your visa application!
